Student Leadership Course

History And Vision

Engineering colleges all over the world are expected to provide engineering education whose outcome produces graduates with some key attributes. The National Board of Education (NBA) in India requires the following:

1) A Knowledge base for engineering

2) Problem analysis

3) Investigation

4) Design

5) Use of engineering tools

6) Individual and teamwork

7) Communication skills

8) Professionalism

9) Impact of engineering on society and the environment

10) Ethics and equity

11)Economics and project management

12) Life-long learning

These are the same skills required by industry employers. These skills will also provide a foundation for entrepreneurship and innovation and help the engineering graduates to become leaders and socially responsible human beings. The objectives of all IUCEE Student Programs are to assist the students in developing these attributes and skills. In particular, attributes 6 to 12 in the above are not covered meaningfully in the curriculum of most traditional engineering colleges. Our belief is that students develop these skills only by having project based experiences.

Student Leadership Course Fall 2019

From June to November 2019, IUCEE conducted a Leadership Course for selected students from 30 IUCEE Institutions. The objective was to develop student leaders who will create sustainable IUCEE SCALE Chapters and EWB India Student Chapters at their institutions. The course was conducted through a series of biweekly webinars with assignments. Five students from each institution participated and were guided by one faculty mentor at each institution. Topics covered were:
  • Create awareness of leadership qualities
  • Understand and explain concepts behind key inventions from a variety of engineering fields
  • Discuss the Basic Concepts of Design Thinking  develop solutions to engineering problems
  • Create an IUCEE SCALE Student Chapter
  • Identify local Challenges relevant to Grand Challenges
  • Engage with one local grand challenge
  • Obtaining contact info for selected EWB chapters and learn from Case Studies
  • Identify their own strengths and weakness relevant to Professional Skills and explore ways to improve
  • Plan for GSF 2019 and ASC 2020
  • Formation of EWB India Student Chapters

100 students, from 13 institutions all over India, completed the course and received certificates and formed IUCEE Student Chapter in following institutions :

  • Anantha Lakshmi Institute of Technology & Sciences, Ananthpurnurag Group  of Institutions, Hyderabad, TS
  • CMR College of Engineering & Technology, Hyderabad, TS
  • D.K.T.E.Society’s Textile & Engineering Institute, Ichalakaranji, MH
  • Hyderabad Institute of Technology And  Management, Hyderabad, TS
  • Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan, KN
  • MLR Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, TS

Several of these are in process of finalizing formation of EWB India Student Chapters:

Eight students from this course participated in the Global Student Forum as part of WEEF 2019 in Chennai on Nov 13 to 16, 2019 with partial scholarships from IUCEE.

Student Leadership Course Spring 2020

A modified version of the student leadership certificate course was offered online to IUCEE EWB Chapter, which started in February 2020. Emphasis on developing 21st century skills Innovation, Design thinking, Critical  thinking, Analytical thinking, Collaboration skills, Presentation skills and Leadership skills. Focus was on UN Sustainable Development Goals ending with a project.

In phase 1 of SLC, 250 students from 25 colleges participated. These colleges were required to assign faculty mentors for their students. Students were supposed to submit Individual and Team Assignments every week on Canvas after being guided by the expert faculties. These were graded by a team of 20 volunteer faculties from IUCEE member colleges. They were required to prepare a research paper on each track by working in teams. The teams made presentations on one track of their choices at the end of Phase 1.  Moving ahead, all teams are encouraged to submit proposals for implementation of their solutions according to the EWB India Project Proposal Template in Phase 2. IUCEE and EWB will assist in generating funds for implementation in Phase 3.

Remote Internships

A new program has been initiated in 2020. Remote internships enable students to obtain project experiences while working on line. A pilot program was conducted satisfactorily in partnership with Smartbridge in Hyderabad. The focus of these internships is to provide fundamentals as well as project experiences in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Internet of Things.

Another opportunity for remote internships is with Quanser, Canada. Faculty from selected IUCEE colleges will be selected and trained to use the Quanser Ap Qdex. They in turn will work with teams of students and develop Mobile Aps for Teaching selected courses.
