Engineering leaders are increasingly shaping global policy and corporate strategy, with 1/3 of top-performing CEOs holding engineering degrees, yet our curricula often fail to prepare students for the complex competing interests they will navigate throughout their careers. This talk examines critical case studies—from the Panama Canal Construction and Boeing 737 MAX crashes to algorithmic bias in facial recognition technology, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster, and the Flint Water Crisis—to demonstrate how financial pressures, political interventions, cultural contexts, and environmental concerns create ethical dilemmas that transcend technical problem-solving. Drawing from scholarly work presented at WEEF and IEEE EduCon, I will share innovative pedagogical approaches including interdisciplinary courses in “Engg, Computing, and Social Justice” and “A Seat at the Table” that integrate global perspectives, ethical reasoning, and cultural competency into engineering education. This session provides concrete strategies for preparing students to serve as ethical global leaders who can effectively weigh competing interests while maintaining technical excellence, ultimately arguing that engineering education must evolve beyond purely technical training to include the leadership and societal awareness skills our graduates need to shape an equitable sustainable world.
