“Crazy Idea: What If We Use Engineering to Develop and Deliver Engineering Education?”
Presenters: Jim Goodell and Abdul Azad
Description: This webinar aims to foster an engaging and thought-provoking discussion among engineering educators about the application of engineering concepts and methodologies in the field of engineering education. The conversation will be anchored by an introduction to learning engineering, an emerging and interdisciplinary branch of engineering that integrates systems engineering principles with practices drawn from the learning sciences. Learning engineering focuses on designing and optimizing educational experiences by leveraging human-centered engineering design methods and data-driven decision-making processes. Through this approach, educators aim to create more effective learning environments that support the development of students’ skills and knowledge. Throughout the session, participants will explore how learning engineering can be used to enhance the educational process. The webinar will delve into the application of systems thinking to educational design, the role of feedback loops in improving teaching and learning, and the integration of real-time data to inform instructional strategies. Engineering educators will have the opportunity to reflect on how they can adopt these approaches to solve common challenges in the classroom and improve student outcomes. The session’s ultimate goal is to inspire participants to consider innovative ways of utilizing engineering methodologies to transform and advance educational practices, ensuring a more effective and adaptive learning experience for all students.
