“Professional Ethics”
What role should ethics play in science and engineering? Can professional ethics be meaningfully taught and effectively learned? And how do emerging AI technologies reshape our understanding of ethical responsibility? This presentation explores these questions through video clips, real cases from engineering and scientific practice, and insights from prior studies. The session begins with a concise introduction to major ethical frameworks, followed by a discussion of how ethical challenges arise in professional practice and a practical guideline for addressing them. In the context of curriculum development, the presentation will highlight how integrating a dedicated professional ethics course aligns with the goals of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes holistic education, value-based learning, and the preparation of socially responsible professionals. The overarching premise is that a focused, well-designed study of ethics equips students, engineers, scientists, and other professionals to recognize and avoid unethical conduct—or to navigate unavoidable dilemmas responsibly, with an understanding of legal and regulatory constraints. Ultimately, as ethically trained professionals assume leadership roles across industry and government, they increase the likelihood of cultivating a more responsible and civil technical world.
