Abstract: This talk will give an overview and discuss Sustainable Systems Engineering (SUSE), a new undergraduate program at the University of Calgary trying to reimagine engineering education for the 21st century. Rooted in systems thinking, transdisciplinarity, and regenerative design, SUSE was launched in response to the climate crisis and the evolving role of engineers as stewards of both society and the environment. Students are taught to approach engineering challenges not as isolated technical issues but as part of complex human, ecological, and technological systems. Sustainability is framed as a socio-technical challenge requiring equity, justice, and ethical reflection—not just environmental protection. SUSE challenges traditional engineering hierarchies by valuing emotional intelligence, ethical reflexivity, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems.
Presenter: Dr. Marjan Eggermont, BA, BFA, MFA, PhD, is a Professor (Teaching) at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary, and the former Associate Dean of Sustainability. She has held several leadership roles, including co-director of the United Nations University Hub at UCalgary, research co- chair of SDSN Canada, and academic co-lead for Democracy, Justice, and Sustainability within the Institutes for Transdisciplinary Scholarship. From 2014 to 2017, she served on the board of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and in 2023, she was inducted into the ASEE Hall of Fame. Recently she received the 2025 Top 25 Women of Influence+ Canada Award and the 2025 Quanser Global Sustainability Award, presented in partnership with the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES) and the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC).
