The Need
- The world needs good quality engineering talent
in order to find solutions to the global challenges
facing humanity such as energy, environment,
health and communications.
- A partnership between the world’s largest
democracy (India) and the world’s most advanced
democracy (US) has amazing potential to build
global collaborations in this direction.
- Lessons learnt can be useful to other countries
Key Issue
- Rapid expansion of engineering educational
institutions in India in recent years (from roughly
50,000 engineering seats per year in 1990 to almost
800,000 annual intake of engineering students today
and increasing) has created serious problems of
maintaining quality engineering education and
research to sustain and fuel economic growth in
India itself.
- Other countries will have their own key issues which
need to be addressed.
Our Approach
- The Indo US Collaboration for Engineering
Education (IUCEE) program was conceptualized
by over 150 leaders of engineering education
and businesses from US and India in 2007 to
address this Key Issue.
- A sustainable model to involve all the stake holders and benefit US as well as India.
Our Vision
- The vision was and is to improve the quality and
global relevance of engineering research and
education in India by imbibing of global best
practices from the US and other countries with help
of best faculty members.
- US and other countries will benefit from the higher
quality talent available globally from improved
capacity of Indian engineering research and
education.
Our Goal
The goal is to build a solid base for engineering education and research by strengthening the four pillars of education:
- learner-centric teaching
- research excellence
- outcomes based quality supported by
accreditation
- innovation and entrepreneurship
Our Objectives
- Initial emphasis is on building capacity to
improve the teaching quality of faculty in the
large number of engineering colleges by
introducing state-of-the-art concepts of
problem based and outcomes based
approaches to teaching and learning.
- This is being accomplished with the
leadership of experienced Indian faculty in
collaboration initially with US faculty experts.
