Objective: The workshop aims to offer university teachers an overall perspective into effective teaching/learning principles. Such fundamental root-nurturing principles as absolute commitment to student’s overall development, being a good role model, improving student-teacher dynamic, working on the character ethic, and so forth are examined in detail. Teachers enter into a role play to understand the roles of teachers and students in effective learning. Participants learn to evaluate their own teaching methods and effectiveness through self-assessment exercises.
Details of the workshop: The workshop will be conducted in five sessions of about 3 hours each. The session details are as follows.
Session 1A: Overview and ‘definition’ of effective learning. Participants are allowed to interactively reflect on what constitutes an effective learning process. Each session is divided into two parts.
Session 1B: Some ground realities of university teaching scenario from the perspective of teachers and students. This session will allow participants to reflect on the challenges that a teacher faces in imparting effective learning experiences.
Session 2A: Important root-nurturing qualities of a good teacher. This session will give a perspective into what are some fundamental qualities a teacher should focus on.
Session 2B: Different types of teachers – assertive, non-assertive and hostile teachers. The session examines how to move from being an ineffective hostile to an assertive, effective teacher.
Session 3A: Character vs. Personality ethic. Character development occurs continually throughout one’s life. The session examines how a teacher can impart proper character, attitudes and beliefs in a systematic manner.
Session 3B: Some success stories of character-ethic based teaching. Five students who imbibed the character-ethic training speak about their development and growth. A video of the students in their live environment is shown.
Session 4A: A sample class on Numerical Methods in Engineering Using the principles learnt in sessions 1-3.
Session 4B: Critical Interactive Session in which participants reflect on the class in Session 4A.
Session 5A: Creating an environment of awareness and enthusiasm for bringing about a revolution in the learning process. This session will examine how the participants can carry and spread the enthusiasm they have gained in their respective institutions.
Session 5B: A sample self-assessment session. Participants fill out a confidential questionnaire to assist them to improve their effectiveness in the process of learning.
