Computer software security has emerged as a field of tremendous importance. The rapid growth of electronic commerce over the World Wide Web and the pervasive use of networked computer systems for controlling critical infrastructure has not only opened up new avenues for attackers, but has also created difficult issues of privacy and confidentiality. Course sequences that cover these important topics are a vital part of a modern, relevant computer science/engineering curriculum. The goal of this course is to introduce faculty to cyber security issues and provide a foundation for developing and teaching courses that cover a range of issues in computer software security including virus and worm defense, preventing and protecting against software vulnerabilities, intrusion detection, computer forensics, privacy issues, identify theft, basic cryptography, and virtual machine technology. The course also describes how to integrate computer software security into other mainstream computer science/engineering courses such as operating systems, networks, programming languages, and compilers. Where appropriate, the course will also provide attendees an overview of the major research issues in the cyber security area. A key component of the course is the introduction of the participants to state-of-the-art program analysis and security tools that can be used to create interesting and motivating assignments for students. As part of the course, participants will work through some of the assignments used in a popular computer software security course. Following this hands-on experience, the participants will plan and develop new assignments appropriate for use at their institution.
